Potato Day


If possible, have each student bring in a potato from home.  If this is not feasible, bring in as many potatoes as you are able for activities and discussions.

Idaho Potatoes - Recipes and an area for kids with printable worksheets, such as mazes and word searches.

Mashed Potato Fun for Kids - Contains a variety of potato recipes.

Potato Maze - An activity for growing a potato maze!

Potato Battery - Directions for constructing a potato battery.

Dole 5 a Day - In the Kids' area there is lots of good information on the potato.

The Amazing Potato Book by Paulette Bourgeois.
This book is filled with information and activities all revolving around potatoes!

Brave Potatoes by Toby Speed.
The story of potatoes who sneak out at the state fair to enjoy some adventures.  The story is full of rhymes and wordplays.

The Enormous Potato by Aubrey Davis.
A farmer needs to call in some help in extricating a large potato from the soil.

Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato: An Irish Folktale by Tomie dePaola.
A retelling of an Irish tale, involving a lazy man, a big potato and a leprechaun.

Luck With Potatoes by Helen Ketteman.
A tall tale about a farmer, some cows, and very large potatoes!

One Potato: A Counting Book of Potato Prints by Diana Pomeroy.
A great counting book to use in a math lesson.  The illustrations are done with potato prints.  There are even directions for making potato prints!

Potato: A Tale of the Great Depression by Kate Lied.
A family story written by an eight-year-old girl.

Potatoes (What's for Lunch) by Claire Llewellyn.
A simple, nonfiction book about potatoes.

Sweet Potato Pie (Step into Reading, Early) by Anne F. Rockwell.
A rhyming book revolving around a grandmother's sweet potato pie.
